What was your first investment and how did it go? The float of the first Telstra shares. I sold them three years later for a nice return. What is your favourite type of investment? At the moment I love property, as it gives so many options for tax write-offs, negative gearing, or personal use. What is the best investment advice you have received and who was it from? My dad, when I was young, said to me its harder to earn money than spend it so don't give it away easily. How do you approach investment risk? I think it's important to be prepared to lose what you invest, and if you're not in that position low-risk investments might be the way to go. What has been your best-performing investment? A two-bedroom unit in Forestville, Adelaide which I bought just before the big price rises in the area and the rental squeeze. And the worst? Shares in a horse-racing syndicate. It was fun but the wallet took a good whipping. Where do you get your information about investing? I like to take information from a wide range of sources and people. There isn't always a right or wrong answer and sometimes the unexpected occurs. I know a few people who are very conservative when it comes to investing and some who are very proactive about investing so I try to sit in the middle of those. How would you invest $25,000 if given it tomorrow? It's hard to go past the soaring mining and banking stocks at the moment. They're going so well right now. Also, making some extra payments on the mortgage on my investment property would also be something I would strongly consider doing. Do you have a financial planner? Not at the moment but it's a New Year's resolution, just so I feel more comfortable that I'm getting the best possible returns. I turn 30 next year so I want to look further into my superannuation and seek help from a financial planner to set me up for the long term. How do you feel about life insurance and disability insurance? It's very important to me. While I have debts and risk, there is a need for insurance as I still haven't mastered predicting the future. What's the most extravagant purchase you have made? It will be my overseas holiday to South Africa to watch the Socceroos in the World Cup. That trip won't have a budget on it, that's for sure.
