The hatchback is being set for major overseas sales, as well as a global role on the design and engineering front. GM Holden is the home room for the Cruze hatchback project, as it was for the Chevrolet Camaro now built and sold in North America, and that means any international use of the design will be tied to Fishermans Bend. Export plans are definitely being formulated for the car, even if GM Holden refuses to confirm a deal. Weve got nothing specific to flag right now but theres no way wed turn our back on a good opportunity, GM Holden spokesman Scott Whiffin said. But the interest in the car from other areas of the General Motors empire is obvious and is flagged this week by former Holden design chief Mike Simcoe. He is now GMs executive director of North American exterior design and is confident the Cruze hatchback is a potential winner outside Australia. He spoke at the Los Angeles Auto Show as GM launched the Cruze sedan already sold in Australia into show rooms in North America. And he hinted of an American connection for the baby Aussie hatch. Traditionally, hatchbacks have not been a big seller in this market but there is no reason to think that it couldnt have some impact following on the launch of the Cruze (sedan), Simcoe said. There is also potential for the Cruze hatch in Europe, where the style of car is far more widely accepted. Simcoes enthusiasm for the hatch, scheduled for a production start in the second half of next year, is more good news on the car for Holden. The Cruze sedan has already rocketed ahead of the companys modest sales predictions. Falcon the people's favourite CLEAR CHOICE: The Ford Falcon led the overall field in the Peoples Choice Awards with 2106 votes THE Ford Falcon has won the CarsGuide Peoples Choice Award for the second year in a row. After the polls closed on Wed nesday, with more than 17,000 people having voted across six categories, the Falcon led the field with 2106 votes holding a small lead over the Holden Special Vehicles GTS at 1904 votes. Further back in the field, the margin for third place was even slimmer, with the Audi A6 TDI at 1213 votes narrowly beating the Mazda3 with 1109 and the Nissan GT-R at 944. Both men and women overall favoured the Falcon first and then the HSV, but male voters placed the Nissan GT-R in third place and females overall went for the Mazda3. However, Northern Territory voters gave a bit more applause to the all-paw contenders, putting the Toyota Prado in third place when state-based results are analysed, very closely followed by the Toyota HiLux in fourth. And while it took the overall national prize, the Falcon was edged out into second place in the Family category, with the Holden Commodore SIDI taking the gong and the Subaru Liberty coming third. And the Audi A6 TDI earned gold in the Prestige category, with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in second and the Jaguar XF third. The Peoples Choice SUV was won by the Toyota Prado, leading from the Land Rover Discovery and then Subaru Outback. Maseratis Gran Turismo took out the Performance category with the Nissan GT-R in second and the HSV GTS in third. Peoples Choice First Car voters gave the gold to the Ford Fiesta, followed by Toyota Yaris and Mazda2. Toyotas popular HiLux won the Commercial category, leading the Mitsubishi Triton in second and the Mercedes-Benz Vito in third. The Northern Territorys Anna Evgeniou and Todd Brown were also big winners in the awards. They each receive a $5000 petrol voucher thanks to Coles Express. They were among 14 prize-winning voters who shared in $70,000 worth of fuel vouchers.
