Picture: NICK WELSH Women put NT Bar Association in news By EMILYWATKINS THE Territory Bar Association has become the first in Australia to have women in the president and vicepresident positions at the same time. Raelene Webb QC and Georgia McMaster, both of William Forster Chambers, were respectively elected in the top and secondhighest positions in the association. The elections follow a Law Council of Australia survey released last week that found the Territory has a higher proportion of female to male Queens Counsel or Senior Counsel in the NT and women representing a greater proportion of appearances at the Bar. But Ms Webb said there were still too few women joining the Bar. The figures for female representation in the legal profession in the Northern Territory is encouraging, the picture at the private Bar is still disappointing, she said. She said the association was considering funding a position for a young female barrister, as well as taking up the issue of indigenous lawyers, who she said were an exceptionally underrepresented group in the legal profession. Walking against warming ENVIRONMENTALIST will be getting their walking shoes out today. The NT Environment Centres Walk Against Warming is on from 5pm. Participants will walk from the Nightcliff Jetty to the Nightcliff Pool where there will be speakers, bands and food. Commander denies pub proposition By EMILYWATKINS A SENIOR cop has denied she or any of her female rugby friends propositioned a former officer at the Pickled Parrot in Darwin in 1996. Commander Jeanette Kerr yesterday finished giving evidence to a Work Health hearing brought against the NT Police for alleged workplace bullying. Former detective Senior Con stable Roberta Barnett alleges Ms Kerrs bullying stemmed from the alleged proposition. Mrs Barnett has denied Ms Kerrs evidence that she was kissing another woman in the front of a yellow twin-cab ute the same evening, just moments after her husband Gary Barnett got out of the car. Mrs Barnetts lawyer Sally Gearin cross-examined Ms Kerr on complaints she made about Mrs Barnetts behaviour, including alleged criminal offences. Ms Kerr said Ms Gearin could ask anyone in major crime about Mrs Barnetts alleged slander of her. But when Ms Gearin showed Ms Kerr a memo from one of Mrs Barnetts supervising sergeants saying she was competent in response to the complaints, Ms Kerr said: Its disappointing he lacked mana gerial courage. Mrs Barnett has argued that her complaints about bullying from now-retired Commander George Owen, detective Superintendent Joanne Foley and Ms Kerr were not properly treated by her senior police officers. She says she is now unemployable from a psychological injury they caused. The hearing before magistrate John Lowndes continues.
