ByROBERTCRADDOCK in Brisbane FORMER Test selector John Benaud agrees with Shane Warne that Mike Husseys Test career has reached the end of the road. I believe it is time for Hussey to go, Benaud said. His footwork is terrible. He is totally out of touch. It is not his average that matters when you analyse his form its the direction of his form graph. It has been going down for some time. I would have dropped him in Perth. Australia cannot lose the series. It is a dead Test. Its a shame Brad Hodge isnt still around but there are still good players like Tasmanias George Bailey coming through. If Hussey scores 70 or more in Perth this could go on and on. Hussey has done a fine job for Australia in his five-year stint as a bankable middle order man and his Test returns (3453 runs at 52.3 from 44 matches) are exceptional. After making his Test debut at age 30 he has played his entire career under the pressure of knowing the first time he was dropped from the team would probably spell the end of his career. Few players have started their careers as impressively as Hussey. In his first three years as a Test player he averaged 85, 80 then 74 before 37 then 34 in his last two. Since the start of 2008 Hussey has scored 1519 runs for the mediocre average of 36.1 in 25 Tests. At age 34 he appears a player in decline though Australias selection panel, renowned for their conservatism, appears set on shepherding him through to next summers Ashes series where Australia could field three 35-year-old batsmen, Hussey, Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting. Opener's lone hand spares Pakistani blushes NAPIER: Imran Farhats rare cricketing achievement counteracted Iain OBriens stunning curtain call in the Third cricket Test between New Zealand and Pakistan as the home side took honours on Day 1. Farhats long overdue third Test century enabled him to become only the fourth Pakistani batsman to carry his bat through an innings. His 117 at McLean Park spared the tourists from total capitulation after retirement-bound OBrien opened his farewell Test with a four-wicket burst that had them reeling at 5-51 before lunch. Pakistan recovered to post 223 on a pitch not as treacherous as the scorecard indicated. In the 19 overs available before bad light stopped play, New Zealand reached 47 without loss but Tim McIntosh (31) and debutant BJ Watling (13) both enjoyed reprieves. Pakistans decision to bat on a wicket predicted to offer the seamers greater than usual assistance was under scrutiny once Tim Southee celebrated his 21st birthday by uprooting Salman Butts middle stump. Never afraid to ride his luck, Farhats ton contained a dozen boundaries and a six and came from 138 balls. His 10th boundary summed up his good fortune when a planned swing through mid wicket crossed the rope third man to take him to 83. Tigers topple Sandgropers for remarkable last-ball Shield win HOBART: Stand-in wicketkeeper Brady Jones produced the highlight of his cricketing career, hitting the winning run off the last ball of the match to give Tasmania a onewicket Sheffield Shield victory over Western Australia. Needing five runs off two balls with one wicket in hand, Jones edged a ball to the third man boundary that Brett Dorey looked to have covered until he collapsed with what looked to be a torn calf muscle. Then with the scores tied and one ball left the WA fielders formed a ring around Jones who got enough bat on a good length ball from Ashley Noffke to reach the boundary behind point for an amazing win. Asked if it was his best moment in cricket, Jones said: Ah yep, yeah, definitely, yes, easily. It was awesome. Its my first win for Tassie so that was the main reason I was so happy, he said. Jones took five catches in WAs first innings, while standing in for Australia player Tim Paine who returns to the Tigers line-up for a one-day game tomorrow. I dont look like sneaking back in to the side until hopefully he plays for Australia again, Jones said. WA declared their second innings closed at 4-201 midway through the first session on the final day to set Tasmania 348 runs to win off 85 overs, a run rate of 4.09 runs per over. This seasons leading Shield runscorer Ed Cowan hit 152 to help keep Tasmanias nose in front for most of the chase, until the wickets started tumbling late and WA looked as if they might win. Cowan raised his century off 166 balls with a majestic cover drive for four. Today was a big blur to be honest, Cowan said.
