10 A more detailed policy statement regarding the establishment of a national approach to waste management is expected to be considered at the Environment Protection and Heritage Council's second meeting for 2009, which is anticipated to take place in early November that year. Meanwhile, the council's recent meeting considered a range of options for improving the management of landfill gas emissions, such as improving the methods for measuring the methane-producing biodegradable waste sent to landfill and improving the methods used to quantify the amount of methane gas emitted from landfills. It was decided any such methods would need to complement the planned national emissions trading scheme. Therefore, the ministers agreed to reconsider the improved landfill gas emission management options following the release of the Federal Government's white paper for its Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.
