27 Professional Standards Unit, NT Correctional Services The Professional Standards Unit (PSU) conducted a total of 42 audits during the year compared with 37 for the previous year. The number of audits conducted each year will vary and all audits listed on the yearly plan are not always completed. This occurs when investigations arise, as they take priority over the audit function performed by the unit. Ombudsman Complaints In 2005-06 the total number of complaints made against NT Correctional Services was 137. Of these, 119 were referred from the Ombudsman. This is a decrease of nine complaints compared with the 2004-05 total of 146 complaints. Number Complaints ASCC DCC Other NTCS Complaints 47 89 1 Proven 0 1 0 Unresolved 0 0 0 The majority of complaints were received by the Ombudsman via the Prisoner Telephone System. Most of the complaints were dealt with informally by Professional Standards responding directly to the Ombudsman Inquiry Officer. Other complaints investigated came from NT Legal Aid Commission on behalf of prisoners; directly from prisoners to the Director; from private individuals; and there were four complaints received via the Anti-Discrimination Commission. Other Investigations PSU conducted 14 formal disciplinary investigations in 2005-06. In addition PSU also conducted a number of preliminary investigations into a variety of staff issues. No inability investigations were conducted in 2005-06. PSU did conduct three formal investigations for other Government departments and responded to several grievance complaints on behalf of the Department of Justice. Compliance with the Information Act The Information Act commenced on 1 July 2003. The Act creates a general right of access to Government information held by the department. The Act also protects the privacy of personal information held by the department. An Administrative Access Scheme also operates in Correctional Services, which gives past and present prisoners access to most of their records held by Correctional Services. (This scheme does not operate under the Information Act). The information statement on the departments website lists all the information held by the Department of Justice and is available to NT Government employees and members of the public. The department continues to provide advice, both formally and informally, to NT Government agencies about legal and practical issues arising from the Act.
