5 From the Chief Executive Officer I am pleased to present the Department of Justice 2005-06 Annual Report. The year brought some major changes in Executive staffing. First, the Director of Public Prosecutions Rex Wild QC, retired in January 2006. Rex served as the Director from 1996 and in his time prosecuted many major cases, the most recent and high profile being that of Bradley John Murdoch, who received a mandatory life sentence for the murder of Peter Falconio. Rex made an outstanding contribution to the Territory in his role and we wish him well for the future. Subsequently, the Department of Justices inaugural Chief Executive Officer, Richard Coates, was appointed on the recommendation of an independent panel to the position vacated by Rex. Richard, who was appointed as CEO in 2001, oversaw the challenging period of the departments formation. His extensive experience as a lawyer and administrator helped to create, for the first time, an integrated justice department for the Territory. He was a personable leader with an open door policy, who ably lead the department during a period of major reform and I know I speak for the department when I say he will be missed. Lastly, I was appointed to the position of CEO in July this year after acting in the position since January 2006. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to lead this important agency and I am excited about working with staff to achieve some real outcomes within the justice system and for the Territory community. Id like to express my sincere gratitude to each and every staff member for their hard work and perseverance throughout 2005-06 and I look forward to meeting the challenges the coming year brings. Greg Shanahan Annual Report 2005 2006 / From the Chief Executive Officer
