55 Prisoner Population The average occupancy level of the combined prisons was 98.90 per cent in 2005-06. The daily average number of prisoners held in the adult correctional facilities was 791 (385 at ASCC and 406 at DCC), 3 per cent higher than the previous year (770). As can be seen in the chart, the prison population has generally been increasing over the past 10 years. Figure 12: Yearly daily average adult prisoners from 1996-07 to 2005-06 Rates per 100,000 adults The estimated rate of adult imprisonment in the Northern Territory for 2005-06 was 549 per 100,000 adults, which continues to be significantly higher than in other jurisdictions. For comparison, the national rate of imprisonment is estimated as 155 per 100,000 adults.
