The Log July 2002 page 4 SMALL BOAT SAILING COURSE LEVEL 1, Basic Skills 1 Designed to introduce the beginner to sailing through theory and practical sessions at the end of which an individual should be able to experience the freedom of sailing on small boats under coach guidance. Syllabus includes safety awareness & equipment, wind awareness, some knots, basic heave to, primary boat controls, reaching, capsize recovery drill, towing, leaving and returning to the beach some basic rules and some basic terminology. Eligibility: Beginners - minimum age 10 Cost: Non-members $170, Members $110, Juniors $75 Dates: Tue. 9th July T1; Sat. 13th July P1 Tue. 16th July T2; Sat. 20th July P2 Tue. 23rd July T3; Sat. 27th July P3 (T=theory, P=Practical) LEVEL 2 - Basic Skills 2 This consolidates basic skills 1 and should enable the successful candidate to sail a small boat in sheltered conditions without coach guidance. Syllabus includes rigging, more knots, more right of way rules, sailing to windward, crew recovery drill and wind and tide awareness. This is equivalent to former TL1 Introductory level. Eligibility: Basic skills 1 Cost: Non-members $170, members $110, Juniors $75 Dates: Tue. 30th July T1; Sat. 3rd Aug P1 Tue. 6th Aug T2; Sat. 10th Aug P2 Tue. 13th Aug T3;(test) Sat. 24th Aug P3 (T=theory, P=Practical) LEVEL 5 - Racing Skills 2 To introduce sailors to compass & tuning. Upon completion the successful sailor will be equipped with and aware of the broad range of fundamental skills required to prepare for and compete in a race series. Equivalent to former TL2 grade 11 & 111. Eligibility: Racing skills 1 or equivalent (at least one full season racing at club level) Cost: Non-members $200, Members $160, Juniors $100 Dates: Tue. 20th Aug T1; Sun. 25th Aug P1 Tue. 27th Aug T2; Sat. 31st Aug P2 Sun. 1st Sept P3; Tue. 3rd Sept T3 Sat. 7th Sept P4; (T=theory, P=Practical) SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM A week of sailing activities for the experience and inexperienced younger sailors. The opportunity to sail and learn on a daily basis greatly increases the childs perception and learning.
