1934 London to Australia air race. Entrant no. 5. Boeing 247D, NR2577, flown by U.S. Colonel Roscoe Turner (pilot), Clyde Pangborn (co-pilot) & Reeder Nicholls (radio-operator) was assigned race no. 5, though '57' appeared on the nose. Turner made a comment that "Mr Heinz had paid a lot of money for it". Entered in the speed section the machine finished 3rd with a time of 35hrs 22mins 50secs and claimed second prize of 1500 pounds in lieu of no. 44 KLM DC2.,
