Darwin Post Master, Hirtle Bald (centre) in the vehicle transporting the first air mail from England to Australia to the local post office for sorting and onforwarding to Brisbane by Qantas. The air mail arrived via Koepang aboard Kingsford-Smith's VH-USU 'Southern Cross' on 25 April 1931 and was onforwarded in the Qantas DH61 'Apollo' the following day.
