Description

Flight Lieutenant I. E. McIntyre, left, and Wing Commander S. V. Goble following their arrival in Fairey III D seaplane AIO-3 of the RAAF. The pair were carrying out a survey of a possible seaplane route to Thursday Island from Melbourne as a preliminary to RAN-RAAF survey of the Great Barrier Reef, record the effects of tropical operations on the aircraft and components, and to show the flag for the RAAF 'in the outermost parts of Australia'. Goble and McIntyre spent three days in Darwin during which they carried out an overhaul and essential maintenance before flying out to Broome on 27 April. They eventually returned to Point Cook, near Melbourne, on 9 May, having been the first to circumnavigate Australia by air. Stokes Hill.,
