On 1 December 1916, Darwin-based cyclist and photographer Ted Ryko and the Reverend James Watson travelled to the Methodist mission station on South Goulburn Island on the mission lugger Kathie. The mission had been founded only six months earlier. Ryko shared in the Christmas Day celebrations letting people take turns riding on his bicycle.,

Ted Ryko was at Goulburn Island between 1 December 1916 and 4 January 1917 and missionary Constance Amy Corfield noted that he took a number of photographs (MS 45 Amy Corfield Diary [copy typescript]). Amy Corfield did not arrive on the Island until 5 September 1916. She notes that on 10 September that she 'Attended church service in the morning out in the open air; played the organ with much pleasure'.
