Commanding Officer for Marine Rotational Force, Darwin Colonel Russ Boyce, said Lance Corporal Hans Sandoval-Pereyra, 21, died yesterday after succumbing to injuries from the single-vehicle accident. Colonel Boyce said efforts were unsuccessful in saving the Lance Corporal, a valued member of the Marine Corps. We are saddened by the loss of Lance Corporal Sandoval-Pereyra. He was a beloved member of our community and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends, he said. Lance Corporal SandovalPereyra was born in Fairfax, Virginia, and was an Expeditionary Airfield Systems Technician assigned to the Aviation Combat Element for MRF-D. He was assigned to Marine Wing Support Detachment 24, Marine Aircraft Group 24, based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay before being deployed to Australia. His decorations include the National Defence Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. The second Marine has been released from hospital. In August, 2017, three US Marines died in a training incident in Australia, when a US military aircraft crashed off the Queensland Coast near Rockhampton. Private Ruben Velasco, Lieutenant Benjamin Robert Cross and Corporal Nathan Ordway were lost. The eighth year of the MRF-D program has seen 2500 US Marines stationed in Darwin, where they will remain until the end of October.
