Stuart, who left Parramatta to coach the Raiders after the sacking of David Furner, has wasted no time stamping his authority on his new team, training them in 40C heat and sending them to aweek-long elite training camp. The former NSW and Australia coach has seen big potential for McCrone at hooker. Faith inMoses to deliver title MOSESWigness has taken over the reins again at Brothers Rugby League club for the 2014 season. Wigness, who coached the club for three years and won the 2010 and 2011 premierships, replaces Anthoiny Castro who had held the position for the past two seasons. The clubs seniors sign-on day is at Airport Tavern today from 1pm. Brothers spokesman John Adams said the clubwanted to regain the premiership that they lost to Palmerston last year. New rules to endmass debates MANLY coach Geoff Toovey says captain Jamie Lyon wont have to change his on-field approach to referees despite recent NRL rule changes. Lyon and Canterburys Michael Ennis are seen as two of the games leading debaters when it comes to arguing withmatch officials. But they are set to be stymied by a new law that limits where andwhen captains can speak to refs. Under new rules captains will only be able to speak to refs during a stoppage in play. Lachlan schooled by Shark RUGBY LEAGUE ByDOUGBOOTH MacKillop Sharks centre Levi Russell with student Lachlan Miller at the merger announcement yesterday Picture: JUSTIN SANSON LACHLAN Miller wants to play senior rugby league when he grows up. The MacKillop Catholic College student discovered plenty of ways to help him reach that goal from the now MacKillop Sharks hardtackling centre Levi Russell yesterday. Lachlan, 13, and Russell, 22, were integral parts of the launch to merge the Sharks with the Palmerstonbased college. I like rugby league because of the teamwork that is involved in playing, said Lachlan, who has been playing the game for four years. It is not just a one-man game. I like running with the ball and scoring tries. Russell said young players such as Lachlan were the future of the 13-a-side game. We are looking for a premiership this season and building links such as this is vital for the future, he said. College principal Loretta Graham said MacKillop was trying to build a community spirit through sporting organisations and this was another step forward. David Graham is the Year 8 music co-ordinator at MacKillop but his other passion is rugby league. Growing up in Cairns, he played his first rugby league in Queensland and last year he was with the Palmerston Raiders. However, as the brainchild behind the merger of the school and club, he has new allegiances. The Palmerston demographic is much different to Darwin, Graham said. Queensland and NSW influence the culture. Graham said the merger would help provide a grassroots pathway that had not existed before in rugby league in the Northern Territory. It is important that we try and bridge the gap between school and club, he said. The Sharks will hold their senior sign-on at Mary MacKillop School today from 10am. Quilista is one of 41 horses in the Stradbroke, the Queensland carnivals showpiece race Picture: AAP Stampede for Straddie acceptors Quilista has since been made 21st in the order of entry for the race, which has a capacity field of just 18. The first acceptance figure of 41 is well up on the last four years, with 30 (2018), 27 (2017), 26 (2016) and 33 (2015). Last year just six horses fell away in the last week, leaving 24 final acceptors, while the biggest drop of those years was nine in 2015, where the race was left with 24 at the deadline. At that rate, fancied runners in the race like Tactical Advantage (22nd), Ringerdingding (24th), Con Te Partiro (25th), Victorem (28th) and Outback Barbie (29th) face a task to make the field, while it would be assumed Order Again (31), Niccanova (31), Noble Boy (37) and Desert Lords (40) hopes look forlorn. Calls for the BRC Sprint to be made an exempt race will gather more momentum with this years winner Tyzone sitting outside the cut-off at 19th after yesterdays declarations. Tyzone is at $12 to win the Stradbroke, where betting is headed by The Bostonian ($5). NATHAN EXELBY by through and through. He was a very good mate the whole time I worked for him. Newham was coaxed out of retirement 2 years ago by Makin and he had been training six horses for the owner, with Winning Ways the clear pick of them. He just rang up out of the blue I hadnt heard from him in about five or six years and he just rang and said he wanted to do it again, Newham said. He bought (Winning Ways) at the sales. He never told me he was going to buy a horse. He picked her out on her bloodlines and just bought her. Just over a year ago I said wed win The Oaks with her. Newham on Oaks mission GARRY Newham says a Queensland Oaks win for his talented filly, Winning Ways, would mean everything on Saturday, as he remembers his good friend and biggest backer Paul Makin. Winning Ways races in the colours of Makin, who passed away last weekend. The same colours were worn to many big race wins by Starcraft, who cemented the great relationship between Newham and the owner 15 years ago. Newham said Makin suffered a minor stroke in the last month, which left him partially disabled on the right side and affected his speech. He came home and seemed to be improving, then he had a massive stroke and they rushed him to hospital but they said there was no hope, he said. He was a great bloke, very fair to me. A bit of a character ... he used to look outside the square a fair bit. Hed get a bit carried away now and again. Whatever he said, he stuck He laughed at me. But after she won three or four he agreed to go ahead with it and thought she was every chance as well. Newhams last conversation with Makin came after Winning Wayss unlucky eighth at Doomben on May 18. I spoke to him after the Roses. He was always pretty harsh on the jockey or the horse if they got beat, but that day he said the filly did him proud and that was great, Newham said. It would mean everything (to win The Oaks). It would mean everything for the family and for Paul to think he still had it to pick out the right horse. It will be very emotional if she does win it. Newham said he was very confident of Winning Ways performing a little fairytale this weekend, despite bookies betting big odds about her. I dont think they will go too hard in it because a lot of them will be susceptible to running 2200m. Shes already proven over it against older horses so it shouldnt be any harder against her own age. NATHAN EXELBY He was a very good mate the whole time I worked for him G A R R Y N E W H A M THE biggest first acceptances in at least five years has left a number of top Stradbroke fancies precariously placed as the countdown to the Queensland carnivals $1.5 million showpiece continues. There are 41 horses left in the Stradbroke, including Quilista, after Aquis Farm yesterday paid a $9000 late entry fee for the mare, having purchased her for $950,000 at Tuesdays session of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
