Darwin Harbour; Shoal Bay
This report describes the updated mangrove communities for the approximately 32,000 ha of mangroves and salt flats that line the foreshores of Darwin Harbour, Shoal Bay and areas south of Charles Point and Gunn Point. Results indicate that there has not been any significant, discernible or substantive changes in mangrove forest composition in Darwin Harbour between 1996 and 2016.

Mangrove Monitoring Project: Sub-project A 6 Figure 3. The 1996 mapping scale of 1:25,000 (1 to 1) 3.4 Mangroves of the Darwin Region mapping Draft mangrove mapping for areas outside Darwin Harbour, including Bynoe Harbour, Shoal Bay, Gunn Point and Adelaide River was already available prior to commencement of this project (Brocklehurst et al in prep - Figure 4) and mapped utilising high resolution digital aerial photography. The broader Mangroves of the Darwin Region covers an area of 91,326 hectares. The mapping and attribution from the Mangroves of the Darwin Region was incorporated into the IMMRP mangrove monitoring area for regions outside Darwin Harbour. 3.5 IMMRP mangrove mapping Updating the original 1996 mapping involved on screen digitising and editing of map unit boundaries following visual interpretation of the high resolution digital aerial photography. A nominal scale of 1:8,000 was selected for interpretation (Figure 7). Interpretation was based on colour, texture, previous attribution and expertise in mangrove community and pattern recognition.
