Darwin Harbour; Shoal Bay
This report describes the updated mangrove communities for the approximately 32,000 ha of mangroves and salt flats that line the foreshores of Darwin Harbour, Shoal Bay and areas south of Charles Point and Gunn Point. Results indicate that there has not been any significant, discernible or substantive changes in mangrove forest composition in Darwin Harbour between 1996 and 2016.

Mangrove Monitoring Project: Sub-project A 18 Figure 11. Increased spatial delineation of vegetation communities in 2016 (yellow) compared to the 1996 mapping (red). However, there has been an increase in mangroves areas, particularly at high tidal areas with nearly flat elevations, outside Darwin Harbour, occurring in Shoal Bay region within the IMMRP project area and more extensively on the Adelaide River floodplains outside the IMMRP area. There has also been some increase in mangrove area within the seaward reaches of Shoal Bay. Better definition of the actual change occurring outside Darwin Harbour will be an outcome of MP1 Sub-project B and D.
