This report describes the updated mangrove communities for the approximately 32,000 ha of mangroves and salt flats that line the foreshores of Darwin Harbour, Shoal Bay and areas south of Charles Point and Gunn Point. Results indicate that there has not been any significant, discernible or substantive changes in mangrove forest composition in Darwin Harbour between 1996 and 2016.

Mangrove Monitoring Project: Sub-project A 22 4.2.4 Community boundary change over time: visual interpretation Visual comparison of the 1996 community boundaries for Darwin Harbour with historical and modern photography shows that in most instances, and with scale considerations, there has not been a significant change in these boundaries (Figures 15-18), with the exception of revegetation of areas destroyed or damaged by Cyclone Tracy. Sea level rise in the Harbour has been noted as +19cm (BOM 2011) since the 1996 mapping occurred. However, it also appears that there has not been any significant change in these boundaries or mangrove zonation due to sea level rise. Reasons for this could possibly include: Tight zonation of the mangrove communities, on a fairly restricted elevational gradient, in the Harbour Slow establishment and/or growth of mangrove trees, in response to sea level change Figure 15. 1996 mapping overlayed on a 1945 aerial photograph with reasonable boundary correlation
