Darwin Harbour; Shoal Bay
This report describes the updated mangrove communities for the approximately 32,000 ha of mangroves and salt flats that line the foreshores of Darwin Harbour, Shoal Bay and areas south of Charles Point and Gunn Point. Results indicate that there has not been any significant, discernible or substantive changes in mangrove forest composition in Darwin Harbour between 1996 and 2016.

Mangrove Monitoring Project: Sub-project A 54 Map Unit 5d Avicennia marina low closed-forest Mono-specific stands of Avicennia marina occur in this community. Height varies from 1-3 m with an average of 1.8 m. Sporobolus virginicus grasses may occur in the ground stratum. Geomorphic Unit: High Tidal Flat Tidal Level: Mean High Water Neap to Mean High Water Spring Area: 23 ha (0.07%) Species Richness: 2 Table 23. Map unit 5d structural formation and stand information Strata Life Form Median Cover (%cc) Median PFC (%) Median Canopy Height (m) Upper tree 90 54 1.8 Lower grass 40 0.2 Distribution and Habitat Notes: This community is found growing at the edges and as patches within salt flats. It is particularly common on the salt flats to the north of Dundee Beach, and may represent new mangrove establishment. Associated Vegetation Types: This map unit is closely related to map unit 5c, although is almost exclusively dominated by Avicennia marina. Dominance of Avicennia marina is possibly influenced by freshwater/saltwater interaction. It is also similar to map units 7a and 7b.
