NTNE01Z01MA - V1 COURIERMAIL.COM.AU FRIDAY FEBRUARY 8 2019 SPORT 73 BIG BASH TONIGHT may not be the BBL swansong for Brisbane Heat Bash Brother Brendon McCullum. In what would be one of the more stunning developments of the seemingly never-ending tournament, the team which has looked nowhere near it for much of the summer requires only to win and a couple of other results go their way to storm into the semis. Brisbane will start outsiders against the Stars, with Ladbrokes tonight and given the Green Machine is laced with its big guns and the Heat have played their home deck appallingly in BBL08 the odds seem right. If the Heat are to qualify for the Big Bash finals, it will not be easy. If they win as outsiders, it is all eyes on the Hurricanes to make sure the Thunder do not immediately leap frog Brisbane into fourth. Ladbrokes bookies have had trouble splitting those two sides with it marked a flip of the coin game at $1.91 each of two. The Cane Train has been the best team all season so, with that in mind, lets imagine they keep it going. Then its all down to the final regular-season game and the Sydney Sixers stopping the Stars at the MCG. If you were having a Heat Hail Mary Multi, it is certainly not a ridiculous bet. At the time of writing, Ladbrokes odds on that happening are 8-1. A healthy return and we would get to see Brendon McCullum in the teal one more time. AFLW In all bar the Roos blow-out of the Blues, the results in Round 1 of the AFLW came right down to the final siren. If the opening week is an indication this is going to be a tight, and more importantly, tough season to punt on. The best play might be the one we alluded to last week. The Kangaroos, fresh from a recruiting spree ahead of their debut season, look like they will be incredibly tough to beat. We will most likely get a better idea this week when they tackle GWS given Carlton do not appear overly competitive. Adelaide, smarting from their one-point loss to the Western Bulldogs, get the Blues this week and Ladbrokes have them 7.5-point favourites in what looks the next best bet of the weekend behind a North Melbourne win. The Lions have the tough task of a trip to Fremantle as both look to make a 2-0 start to the season, but they are still narrow favourites with Ladbrokes. Brisbane are 1.5 points favourites, making the Dockers the value play of the weekend. NBL There are seven games in the NBL this week and every one of them will have some impact on the make-up of the top four. The Adelaide 36ers moved into the top four ahead of Brisbane last weekend and their fate is now in their own hands, but standing in their way is a Melbourne United side desperate to secure the minor premiership. United will start Sundays clash with Adelaide as narrow favourites with Ladbrokes and they have a slightly shaky record as away favourites they have won only four of their past eight games in this scenario. The reigning champions will also be in action against the Sydney Kings tonight and that game could end up deciding the minor premiership and allimportant finals homecourt advantage. Melbourne have won the past 10 games played between these sides and are also favourites for this clash. The Brisbane Bullets are favourites to overcome the Cairns Taipans in what is a must-win match tomorrow afternoon while the Perth Wildcats are $1.62 to account for the Kings on Sunday. EPL The race for the English Premier League title is back on. Liverpool had one hand on an elusive English Premier League trophy when they went nine points clear at the top of the ladder at the end of last year. After last weekends matches, they only had a three-point cushion after dropping points to both Leicester City and West Ham and losing to title rivals Manchester City. City beat Everton yesterday to temporarily go to the top ahead of Liverpools match with Bournemouth. The Reds were as short as $1.33 for the title with Ladbrokes, but they are now out to $2 and punters clearly believe that this has shades of their late-season meltdown in 2014. Manchester City got out to as long as $3.40 and they are now title favourites at $1.83 following their win over Arsenal last weekend. Tottenham are now only five points behind Liverpool and cannot be ruled out. They are $17 after getting out to as long as $51 with Ladbrokes last year. UFC 234 The UFC returns to Australia for UFC 234 at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday and this is a huge moment in the career of local champion Robert Whittaker. Whittaker will become the first Australian to defend a UFC Championship on home soil and he heads into this bout with Kelvin Gastelum on the back of nine-straight wins. It is no surprise that Whittaker is a $1.40 favourite, but what is a surprise is the fact that the majority of the early money has been with Gastelum at $3. Gastelum earned this title fight with victories over Michael Bisping and Ronaldo Souza, but Whittaker represents a different challenger for the American and Whittaker to win by decision at $2.90 does represent value. SOUL SURVIVORS: Matt Renshaw, Brendon McCullum and the Brisbane Heat are still in the hunt for the BBL finals and could be worth including in your plans this week. Picture: Getty Images CRITICAL PLAY: The Kangaroos look dangerous in the AFLW while Cameron Bairstow and the Brisbane Bullets must win. Dargento failed to win a race during the Spring, but he wasnt far away at the highest level. He is a horse that runs well fresh and he beat Kementari home over this trip in the Spring. A great each-way bet at $11. DARGENTO TO WIN LADBROKES C.F. ORR STAKES @ $11 Melbourne City have won four of their past five against Adelaide United and should continue. They have won eight of their past nine games as home favourites and are one of the most reliable A League betting sides. MELBOURNE CITY TO BEAT ADELAIDE UNITED @ $2.20 There isnt much between these sides and the home court advantage should give the Kings an edge. They have won five of their eight games as underdogs this season, while Melbourne United are a flat 4-4 as away favourites. SYDNEY KINGS TO BEAT MELBOURNE UNITED @ $1.95 BRIGHTON AND BURNLEY TO DRAW @ $3.10 BEST BETTING HORSE RACING A-LEAGUE NBL This is a match that has stalemate written all over it. Two of the past three games between these sides have finished as scoreless draws and backing the draw in games involving these teams has been a profitable play.
