THURSDAY FEBRUARY 20 2020 NEWS 03 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA LORD Mayor Kon Vatskalis is taking the escalating problem of Darwins homelessness to Canberra next week. Mr Vatskalis blamed bans on selling alcohol in remote communities for an influx of itinerant visitors to Darwin. The reason we have homelessness in the Territory is because people leave their homes Kon takes fight to Canberra GARY SHIPWAY gary.shipway@news.com.au in their community to come to Darwin because they cannot have they same rights like any other Australian the right to go to the pub, the right to go and buy wine, the right to actually have alcohol in your own community, Mr Vatskalis said. Im very frustrated with the problem because a lot of people think it is a council responsibility because people do not read the bylaws. Our powers are very limited. Mr Vatskalis said the number of people living rough in Darwin and its surrounds had reached almost unmanageable levels and urgent action was needed to fix the problem. He pointed to the 5502 homeless people his council rangers had contact with during the recent CBD Public Places Patrols trial as proof of the size of the problem. Everyone is telling me this is the biggest problem they have seen for a very, very long time, Mr Vatskalis said. Obviously there is currently a big influx of itinerant people from outside of Darwin. Our Public Places Rangers visited 1677 locations during the trial and observed 5502 vulnerable people and engaged with 1827 of them. Look, more than 5500 people sleeping rough in and around Darwin is a lot of people. I am heading to Canberra next week for a meeting with the Federal Government to try and find a solution on homelessness, especially in the Northern Territory. When I mentioned it to the Federal Homelessness Minister, Luke Howarth, he was absolutely surprised he couldnt believe it. I said you talk about homelessness in Melbourne and Sydney but this is totally different to what we have in the Territory. As a mayor I want to see a comprehensive solution for homeless people. I want somewhere they can actually stay overnight. I want somewhere they can be checked by doctors, somewhere they can actually be safe, somewhere they can access Centrelink, somewhere they can access return to country.
