iv SUMMARY A sample of the ca 2510 Ma Billabong Complex of the Tanami Region, previously dated by SHIRMP U-Pb zircon geochronology, was analysed for zircon Hf and O isotopes. Isotopic analysis was undertaken to test the hypothesis of the presence of extensive Archaean basement to the North Australian Craton. The results were compared to isotopic data acquired from a similarly aged basement in the Pine Creek Orogen. The Hf and O isotopic data suggest that the Billabong Complex was derived from mixing between mantle-derived components comprising juvenile, ca 2.76 Ga crust and an isotopically evolved (ca > 3.3 Ga) component.
