Picture: SUPPLIED FOR generations, Labour Day or May Day as it is known in the Northern Territory has marked an annual celebration in recognition of those who struggled and succeeded to ensure decent and fair working conditions in Australia. Commemorating the granting of the eight-hour working day unions, community groups and the general public across the Territory are given a reprieve from work on the first Monday in May, free to rest and relax with family and friends. In recognition of May Day this year, Alice Springs local Christina Phillis shared a treasured memory with the Centralian Advocate. Travelling to Adelaide to attend the ALP Womens Suffrage Centenary Dinner in 1994, Ms Phillis brought with her a pair of T-shirts created by the Northern Territory Trades and Labor Council, featuring cameos of women from all around the world. The words May Day Darwin 1994 emblazoned in red on the front with Towards the Century of the Womens Vote in the Northern Territory below, the T-shirts also marked the passing of the Womens Suffrage Bill in 1894 in both SA and the NT. Representing the British Parliament at the event was none other than two time Academy Award winning actor and Member of Parliament Glenda Jackson the only British MP to have ever won an Oscar; both for Women in Love (1970) and A Touch of Class (1973) Ms Jackson was very generous with her time, talking to lots of people, Ms Phillis said. I took the T-shirt up and presented her with it and explained what it was and she was tickled pink. She said she would take it back to England and put it in her office!
