Description
Mapping the Future is a five-year (2018-22) program funded by the Northern Territory Government to undertake water, land, soil and biodiversity assessments in areas with high development potential. The goal of these studies is to support sustainable development of natural resources and to de-risk investment. This report is one of several technical reports describing the biophysical resources of the Gunn Point peninsula, the others addressing terrestrial biodiversity, groundwater availability, vegetation community mapping, and agricultural land suitability. An accompanying summary report provides an integrated overview of the soil, land and water resources and biodiversity values of the Gunn Point peninsula.
Potential future developments on Gunn Point peninsula may have impacts on the marine and coastal environment. New data collection in these environments was outside the resources of the Mapping the Future project. However, to assist future planning and management of the area, this report provides a desktop assessment of the current knowledge of biodiversity values within the coastal and marine environments. Information gaps assist with setting research priorities and identify the data needed to sustainably plan and manage future developments.
For this assessment, the marine and coastal area of Gunn Point peninsula is defined by the area seaward of the coastline, bounded by Gunn Point and Cape Hotham on the mainland and Cape Gambier and Red Cliff on Melville Island. This area is approximately 500km2 and is dominated by strong and complex currents, which influence sediment characteristics, benthic habitats and fauna species movement patterns.,
