This baby barra took a tiny soft plastic prawn. ALTHOUGH low water temperatures do impact on the feeding behaviour of barramundi, it by no means signals that its impossible to nail a barra when the mercury spirals downward. For those of us who have lived here in the deep north, there is no doubt this dry season is one of the coldest in many years and, yes, it has put a dampener on the barra action. But with a change in tactics and by looking for warm water you can increase your chances of an encounter with Lates calcarifer dramatically. So, how do you look for warm water when the temperature readout on your sounder tells you its 22C? Tidal movement is a critical factor. I prefer the relatively neapish tides with the low tide falling mid to late afternoon. This gives the flats and the shoulders adjacent to the creek mouths and the drain time to warm up thanks to the sun. There are two important factors to this approach, the first being the fact bait fish like the warm water as well and will move into the warmer shallows, particularly on the tidal flats. The old adage about find the bait and you find the fish is right on the money, and if you can find concentrations of bait theres every chance youll find the barra not too far away. There is a bit of an upside to finding sleepy barra mooching around the warming flats; due to their metabolism being slowed, they dont tend to be as flighty and allow you to get a bit closer when the time comes to fire off a shot at a cruising fish. This is where downsizing your offering comes into play. Small hard bodies and small soft plastics are all the rage when the cold water has all but stopped the barra dinner bell from ringing. Its an oldie but a goodie but the Nilsmaster Stalwart is a proven fish taker, a ditto there for the little Halco Scorpions, the Baby B52 and the small Gold Bomber. Really though, if its small it stands a good chance of getting eaten. On the softie front, the small Squidgies are good but once again its all about the size. Ive taken plenty of barra on the tiny 1 inch Sliders and the ultra tiny DOA shrimp that is only an inch long. The challenge is holding on to a decent barra (or threadfin) on those soft fine wire hooks. You need to run with the micro softies. My only bit of advice in that scenario is to hold on and look skyward for some divine help. The other cold-water option is live bait and you can simply anchor a live mullet in the mouth of a good-looking drain or you can adopt the hybrid approach and look for cruising fish and then lay a small live bait in their path. The bottom line is simple though. Yes, its a tough time of the year for the barra crazies but its very much a case of maintaining your work ethic and changing tactics. By the way, your by catch will improve dramatically as well, with threadfin, golden snapper, bream and flathead all taking a shine to your micro offerings. ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,. 1111 ,... ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,. ..,.
