In 2016, the idea of Council starting a roads maintenance team was initiated by this Directorate and if it happened, it would be a first. This led to Council acquiring some road equipment. Firstly, a new skid loader with milling head accessories for road patching work was purchased through a SPG. This was followed by the purchase of a 4m3 Flocon Asphalt Unit. Last year, a tender was awarded to Remote Civil of Katherine to patch, re-construct and seal 1500m of road in Alpurrurulam under R2R (roads to recovery) funding. A deal was made with the contractor to train a Council road crew on using the Flocon to patch roads. After several weeks of on-the-job training by the contractor, the road crew was ready to apply their recent skills and knowledge at the communities. The road crew has since completed one round of road patching and stacking of derelict cars to around 5 x Barkly Regional Council communities. By mid-Oct this year, the crew will commence the second round of patching roads and stacking cars. By then, it will be the wet season which we need to be flexible enough to work around the wet.
