West Arnhem Wire - Fortnightly news in brief from Jabiru, Gunbalanya, Maningrida, Warruwi and Minjilang 3 The West Arnhem Wire | 18 September - 9 October 2020 The on-country screening in Gunbalanya. Photo credit: High Ground. NEW COMMUNITY PICNIC AREAS IN MANINGRIDA SPECIAL ON-COUNTRY SCREENING Two new undercover picnic tables have been installed in the Maningrida township for the community to utilise, seek shelter and enjoy at all times. Funded by the Maningrida Local Authority, the new communal meeting areas are situated at the front area of the West Arnhem Regional Council office. The original location was selected as it features large open spaces and facilities nearby, and the final position of the shelters were chosen following consultation with the community and Council Service Manager Yanja Thompson. Each space features a roof shelter, one table and two park benches. There is also a water bubbler installed between them for public use. Stedman Constructions carried out the installation which took around one week to complete. West Arnhem Regional Council wishes to thank the Local Authority members for supporting this project which will benefit the community for a long time to come. Proudly supported by MANINGRIDA LOCAL AUTHORITY Gunbalanya community members including Traditional Owners were given a special on-country screening of High Ground on Sunday, 27 September. Those involved in the production of the movie wished to return it to those who helped to create it with intimate community screenings in Gunbalanya and Yirrkala. Many local organisations assisted in making the event possible including monetary and food donations, helping with set up and more. Those involved in Gunbalanya were Gumurdul and Nayinggul Families and Traditional Owners of Gunbalanya, West Arnhem Regional Council, Gunbalanya Meatworks, the Service Station, Gunbalanya Sports and Social Club, Gunbalanya School, Injalak Arts, Gunbalanya Police, Health Centre, Stronger Children for Community, Adjumarllarl store and Board and many others from Jabiru and Gunbalanya. MARRAWUDDI LEADS THE WAY IN JABIRUS POST-MINING TRANSITION The bigger spaces at this new site will mean we can offer welcoming areas for artists to work as well as a larger retail area and more central location for tourists to find us. With our new caf and LaMarzocco espresso machine were also offering Kakadus best coffee. Visitors and locals alike should come and have a great coffee and spend some time admiring the marvellous West Arnhem art available at the gallery, Ms Hagebols said. << From Front page
