26 BUSINESS WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 4 2020 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 $600m work up for grabs Defences Mount Bundey Training Area is in for an upgrade. Picture: Supplied INDUSTRY briefings have started for work opportunities on a key Top End Defence project worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The project, to upgrade firing ranges, has been contracted to homegrown construction giant Sitzler, which held the first of its North Australia briefings last night at the Darwin Convention Centre. The briefings move to Katherine tonight and then Timber Creek and Kununurra over the following consecutive days. The NT Training Areas and Ranges Project scope of work is to upgrade and expand the existing facilities at Robertson Barracks, Close Training Area, Kangaroo Flats Training Area, Mount Bundey Training Area and Bradshaw Field Training Area. The work is to support the United States Force Posture Initiative and expand Defence capability with the Northern Territory. Sitzlers appointment as the managing contractor for the $500-$600m project is a coup for a Territory company. It is a tangible sign that Australian Defence now has a procurement system that opens doors for regional businesses. Over the past few years Territory industry, its peak bodies with the support of the NT government, has lobbied hard for procurement change in Canberra. The Morrison federal government through Defence Ministers like Linda Reynolds and Marise Payne, has shown a very sympathetic ear to giving recognition to local workforce capabilities. The NT Training Areas and Range Project works are due to start in mid-2021 and be completed in 2026. The work includes: nDecommissioning of select facilities and ranges nUpgrade of existing training area facilities nConstruction of new facilities including range control, weapons ranges, aircraft landing sites, vehicle wash points, camp and medical facilities n Provision on new roads and upgrades to existing roads.
