56 SPORT SATURDAY NOVEMBER 28 2020 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 Magnay poised for new Pelicans brief BRISBANE Bullets star Will Magnay is headed for the NBA, with the towering centre set to sign a two-way deal with the New Orleans Pelicans. While the Bullets wont yet comment on the deal, its understood the paperwork is currently being finalised with an announcement expected over the weekend. Magnays imminent move comes hot on the heels of Sydneys Josh Green being drafted by the Dallas Mavericks this week. Ryan Broekhoff is also set to link with fellow Aussie Ben Simmons in Philadelphia, and Matt Dellavedova has signed another one-year deal with Cleveland as the Australian presence continues to be strong in the NBA. Magnay, 22, has previously spent two years in United States playing college basketball for the University of Tulsa. A Nudgee College old boy, Magnay is the younger brother of Melbourne Rebels rugby union centre Campbell Magnay, and is a nephew (by marriage) of former Test cricketer Michael Kasprowicz. In February, Magnay said: The best way to approach it for me is to not get caught up too much in all the external noise thats been going on. He had been due to go to the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas in July, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the terms of a two-way deal, Magnay would also be able to play for a Pelicans G League affiliate team. Thats if the G League goes ahead. It wasnt completed last season due to COVID-19. It sounds just like a UFC promotion in Las Vegas but its actually one of the mouth-watering match-ups taking place in Australian water polo today. Unable to practise against foreign teams because of travel restrictions, Water Polo Australia has organised its own tournament to help prepare its mens and womens teams for next years rescheduled Tokyo Olympics. Split into four mixed teams, Australias best players will compete in a T20 beach polo competition at the Cabarita Swimming Centre in Concord before rejoining their training comps for the long road to Tokyo and theres a big NRL connection. Blockers Boy is AJ Roach, a long-time member of the Australian mens team whose dad just happens to be rugby league legend Steve Roach. Daryls daughter is Bronte Halligan, one of the stars of the Australian womens squad. Her father is Daryl Halligan, the former NRL leading pointscorer. AJ and Bronte have been named as two of the four captains for the KAP7 Clash of the Champions tournament, along with Joel Dennerley and Keesja Gofers. I think the girls will be keen to show theyre just as strong and fit as the boys and the boys wont want to let the girls get one up on us it will be a lot of fun, Roach said. Stranded on land for months, Bronte Halligan said it was just nice to compete again after Tokyo was postponed for 12 months. We havent played competitive water polo due to COVID-19 for a while, she said.
