06 NEWS FRIDAY JANUARY 8 2021 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 A MAN granted bail after being charged over his alleged involvement in a serious buggy crash remains behind bars as he failed to come up with the bail money. Michael Dixon, 35, was granted bail in the Darwin Local Court on Tuesday on the condition he provide a $3000 surety. He stands charged with driving cause serious harm and drink driving over the crash that seriously injured his partner a police officer with the Road Policing Command. However, after the success of his bail application, the NT News understands Dixon remains behind bars as he and his family were unable to get the $3000 together. He may now be forced to remain behind bars until his next court appearance on February 8. The court heard that Dixon and his partner, 33-year-old Kristi Wenck, were at a party in the early hours of Sunday where Dixon had been drinking. They decided to take the buggy for a ride before it rolled several times on Bees Creek Rd. Buggy drivers bail fail SARAH MATTHEWS Woman charged NORTHERN Territory Police have charged a 41-year-old female following an alleged assault in Coolalinga. About 2am Wednesday, the woman allegedly assaulted a man, 48, with an edged weapon. He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. The woman was charged with causing serious harm and engaging in conduct that contravened a DV order and was remanded in custody to face court on March 3, 2021. Repatriation numbers to reach 10,000 passengers WITH the most recent case of COVID-19 detected in the Northern Territory being someone who was not showing any symptoms, questions have been raised about the Territorys approach to coronavirus testing. A 37-year-old woman tested positive at Howard Springs after arriving in Darwin aboard a repatriation flight from Frankfurt, Germany, on the weekend. The NT government said the woman was asymptomatic at the time of testing. When questioned by the NT News, Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the government would be agile in its approach to COVID-19 testing. Of course, it is tricky but we follow a scientific and clinical regimen so we know that we dont have community transmission cases spreading in our community, Ms Fyles said. If that was to change then the testing advice around it would certainly change. Ms Fyles said one change could be to test all people who had been in a particular location, regardless of whether they had symptoms. Weve seen interstate, testing people that may be asymptomatic but have been at certain locations so we are following the clinical advice, she said. Its kept us safe today and it will continue to be agile and respond to the communitys needs. Ms Fyles said the NT would begin wastewater testing for COVID-19 in the coming months, making it the last jurisdiction to do so. She said it had taken so long to begin widespread wastewater testing as authorities didnt want to alarm the public with false positives. The information from our health professionals is we need to be targeted with the testing that were doing, Ms Fyles said. The virus can take many weeks or months to shred. We saw an individual that had previously had the illness, and because they were tested in the Territory it picked up a low positive result. Thats the type of example, in terms of if we were testing without community transmission wed be picking up old cases which might cause alarm within the community. Ms Fyles said she was confident the Territory would be ready to roll out a COVID-19 vaccine, saying the first vaccine would be approved in the coming weeks. We know the two main vaccines one is a little easier in terms of the supply distribution chain, she said. The other vaccine does need to be kept at an extremely cold temperature. But all these factors are being worked through in how we would roll out the vaccine in the Northern Territory. SARAH MATTHEWS Questions raised over asymptomatic positive NT coronavirus cases QUARANTINE SECURITY NOT EXPOSED SECURITY staff working at Howard Springs pose no danger of contracting and spreading coronavirus to the wider community or while working other jobs in the community, NT health officials say. It comes after alarm bells rang in Darwin resident Michelle Hensons head, when her Uber driver told her he also worked as a guard at the centre. We just casually made conversation with the driver, if he had another job and when he told us we looked at each other and thought oh my god, is this actually safe?, she said. Someone working at Howard Springs shouldn't they be limiting their contact with the public? We were worried wed potentially been put at risk. A COVID-19 Emergency Operations Centre spokeswoman said security staff, who were managed by Northern Territory Police and Welfare Group, had no interaction with those at risk of being infected with coronavirus at the quarantine facility. As part of strict infection control measures at the Howard Springs quarantine facility, security staff only work in the green zone of the centre and do not have access to the zones that accommodate people undertaking quarantine, she said.
