48 SPORT MONDAY JANUARY 25 2021 NTNE01Z01MA - V1 AFL puts squeeze on its pre-season The AFL pre-season format for 2021 has been modified, with the traditional summerautumn competition being slashed to a one-week event. A league statement yesterday confirmed this years preseason competition, which will be dubbed the AAMI Community Series, would see all teams play one match across Wednesday, March 3 to Sunday, March 7. All clubs were initially slated to play two pre-season games across a three-week block. But the AFL has revised the model in a move to help reduce travel before the home-and-away season. Teams will still play a second practice match, which will be scheduled by the AFL, but will have the power to select the format of their games. The structure of the preseason will see each team participate in the following: One pre-season practice match Scheduled by the AFL. Held in the last week of February. Played against a team in the same state. Clubs to decide on the format of each game (number of players, quarters, etc). One AAMI Community Series match An AFL-sanctioned preseason game. Held between Wednesday, March 3 and Sunday, March 7. Format and game length as per 2021 premiership season rules. All clubs will have a minimum seven-day break between their pre-season practice match and their Community Series game. As he prepares to enter his 13th AFL season, Ziebell (pictured) will likely be deployed as a half-back flanker in 2021 as coach David Noble begins to stamp his authority on a young North side. The 29-year-old, who has made a career out of attacking the ball at stoppages with ferocity, revealed he had been training with the clubs defensive group over recent weeks and was enjoying the challenge. Ziebell said he had drawn inspiration from champion midfielders that had moved into the backline during the latter stages of their careers. Nobesy floated the idea pre-Christmas about going across half-back and it was something I definitely entertained, Ziebell told 7 News Melbourne. Ive got some great role models in the past doing the same thing in Luke Hodge and Matty Boyd and guys like this from different clubs who can go down there and have an impact. Ive always said, whether it be midfield, forward or back, Ill play wherever the coach wants me to play. Ziebell was restricted to just eight games during the Kangaroos disastrous 2020 campaign due to hamstring setbacks, but the 218-game veteran said hed had a smooth pre-season to date. Ziebell is uncontracted beyond this season. Star Roo embraces new role BEN WATERWORTH Indulge with 50% off your favourite magazine at Woolworths. Scan this coupon to redeem your discount.
