Australian athlete Sally Pearson Ph ot og ra ph er : P et er W al lis PATRICK TADROS IF youre looking for inspiration to get your family more active, there are plenty of games parents can play with kids to improve their fitness while having fun, said fitness coach James Podsiadly. The AFL star loves getting outdoors and playing, which led him to create a kids fitness program with Coles. Getting kids active is not just about the physical. There are some serious mental health benefits also and you could argue it makes them smarter, Podsiadly said. Here, Podsiadly provides the importance of keeping every family member active. What is your involvement with Coles Healthy Kicks? We collaborated with the AFL, Coles and my business AFL Max to create an online health program for kids in 2020. My role was to design and host an active training week that was based on a typical AFL or AFLW training week. My passion is getting kids active and having fun, which is where the idea for AFL Max came about. Being able to create a program for kids and families to watch and participate in during a tough year was really rewarding. Why is it important for kids to start exercising early? Physical literacy and gross motor skills have been on the decline in our kids for a number of years and that is going to lead to unhealthy adults in the future. Everyone knows all the benefits of kids exercising it promotes healthy growth, helps maintain healthy weight, improves coordination and so on. Other benefits include boosting confidence and self-esteem and improving cognitive function. How do you know if youre exercising too much? Youll either start to get sore muscles, bones or joints. You may even start to feel really flat and tired. I have seen people overtrain because they Keep kids active WITH AFL STAR AND FITNESS COACH JAMES PODSIADLY either set themselves some unrealistic goals or they think more is always better. We see elite athletes periodise their training programs where they try and find the balance of continuous improvement and staying healthy. I think regular punters can do the same. I would always recommend a program that builds your fitness over a period of time and has regular less strenuous weeks during. Is cardio fitness or strength training more important? Its all dependent on your personal goals. Personally, I believe all exercise programs should have variety and have a good balance of all types of exercise. I dont value one over the other as they both have their benefits. We know that cardio training increases your stamina and helps you lose or maintain weight. Strength (resistance) training helps increase muscle mass and bone strength. Both are important as we get older. Whilst you were an elite athlete, how would your diet differ from regular punters? When youre training for six hours each day you burn a lot of calories and you need to replenish them with healthy foods. Diet was so important to my recovery from high intensity training that I was pretty strict on the type of foods I consumed. Lots of fruit, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains.
