Depicts a flamboyantly dressed gold miner standing and a young Aboriginal man sitting. They pose outside on a timber verandah. Manuscript on back: Costume of the diggers in P.D. (Port Darwin) all the Gentlemen dress just like they do in Melbourne. Mr Solomen(sic). Manuscript in another hand on back: September 19th 1875. Manuscript in another hand on back at lower left: IV. The only photographer known to be doing portrait photographs in Darwin in the 1870s was William Barlow (1844-1912). Provenance is not known from the date of creation to 2013 when it was purchased by a Melbourne vendor in California and then was sold to Josef Lebovic in about 2018.
