Biographical notes

Andrew De Julia worked as a shunter, one of several men who pushed the railway trucks by hand to and from the ships' sides. De Julia, a member of the No.3 gang, was killed while working on the Neptuna. Andrew De Julia was born in Russia in 1905. He migrated to Queensland in 1924, before moving to Katherine in 1926 to work on the railway at Katherine River, Mataranka and Birdum. In 1929 he and his wife took up land at Adelaide River. He tried buffalo shooting and mixed farming, before moving back to Katherine before the war. De Julia's wife, Lydia, was evacuated from Darwin on the Australian merchant vessel Koolama prior to the raid. On 23 February 1943, De Julia's family placed the following notice in the West Australian: 'Dear husband and father Andrew who was killed in Darwin, February 19, 1942. Inserted by his wife and children, Mena, Natalie, Lydia, Ivan, Olga.' De Julia Park and De Julia Court in the town of Katherine are named in his memory.,
