Biographical notes

Earl "Whitie" Shores was an American labourer on Darwin Wharf who lived on Fannie Bay Beach. He worked the Pinman Turntable on the right angle of the wharf. The first bombs dropped during the Darwin raid landed in the water of Darwin Harbour. The second lot hit the right angle of the wharf, destroying a large section of the decking and severing access to the land. The explosion threw a locomotive and six railway trucks into the water, along with Shores and several other men, including Geoffrey Dangerfield, Ernie Hodges, and Francisco Chavez. All these wharf labourers were killed instantly. According to the police probate documented on 9 August 1949, Shores died intestate with no widow or known next of kin.,
