History
VP-22 patrolled from Darwin with tender support supplied from the William B. Preston. While on a patrol mission she was shot down by the Japanese. The seriously wounded were picked up by the tramp steamer SS Florence-D which was sunk that same afternoon. Some of VP-22 crew made it to Bathurst Island and were rescued on 23 February by HMAS Warrnambool and returned to Darwin.,
