History

8 Infantry Battalion (City of Ballarat Regiment) arrived in Noonamah, 19 February 1942. The Japanese bombers flew over their positions on the way to Darwin. They moved closer to Darwin and camped adjacent to the United States 147 Field Artillery at 17 1/2 Mile Camp at the junction of Howard Springs Road and the Stuart Highway. The Unit went on to fight in Bougainville and New Guinea where Frank Partridge became the only soldier from the Militia to win the Victoria Cross.,
