Councillors' Corner Residents, Businesses, Visitors, Market Stall holders, Volunteers and organisers were stunned to say the least to hear that the 2021 Gold Rush Festival was cancelled. The event was cancelled only hours before the 1st event being the Art Competition on the Friday night. Following this decree on the Friday, made at the highest level of the Victoria Daly Regional Council, an evening and morning was fueled with speculation and Chinese Whispers as to the truth of the matter and the reasons behind the 11th hour cancellation of our Annual Gold Rush Festival. It wasnt until 11am on the day of the planned Gold Panning Competition and Festivities (Saturday) that an announcement was finally made on ABC Local radio that the event was postponed. A new date is to be set that is compatible with the events calendar in the Top End. Our Works team has been kept VERY busy fixing the pot holes in roads in the area. The Umbrawarra Road to Kybrook had a whopping 104 holes to be repaired! Council elections are taking place in August throughout the Territory. If you are not on the Electoral Roll, I urge you to register so that you are eligible to vote. The roll closes at 5pm Tuesday 27 July 2021. The next Council Meeting is to be held in Katherine on 29 June 2021. Cr Gaye Lawrence Elected Member - Pine Creek Ward Victoria Daly Regional Council COMMUNITY NEWS FERG News The Jawoyn Rangers completed their 1st series of Prescribed Burns in Pine Creek recently. Under the watchful eye of Fire Consultant Ben Lewis they completed the burns within 8 days. Apart from a few minor teething problems, all the burns went as planned. Well done team. A quiet month for our crews with just a few training days to complete the month. In the past few weeks I have no ced a drama c increase in the number of large animals (buffalo, horses, ca le etc) in and around our roads. Drivers need to be extra cau ous when travelling at this me of the year. Most of the animals are on the hunt for food & water and will cross roads frequently in their search for food or when moving away from fire affected areas. Please take care and remain vigilant. Recently our crew spent the morning at Pine Creek School where we spoke to the students about the dangers of fire and the role that our Firefighters play within our community, we demonstrated various pieces of equipment and allowed the students to look around our truck which was a highlight. Thank you to Principal Purje and her staff for allowing us the opportunity to visit. As always, we need new members, so if you are 18 yrs and older, maintain a reasonable level of fitness and willing to undergo a Criminal history check then give me a call, we train on Thursday, training and uniform supplied.
