Northern Territory Child Deaths Review and Prevention Committee Annual Report 2020-21 Underlying cause of death by ICD-10 chapter, gender and Aboriginal status, NT, 2016-2020 Table 15 shows for all sub-groups the leading coded causes of death were certain conditions originating in the perinatal period and external causes of morbidity and mortality. There was a significant difference between the numbers of male (n=121, 57.6% ) and female (n=84, 40%) deaths over this period and significantly more Aboriginal (n=134, 63.8%) than non-Aboriginal (n=76, 36.2%). Of these, (n=18, 40%) children who died were the result of intentional self-harm, (n=12, 66.7%) Aboriginal and (n=6, 33.3%) non-Aboriginal deaths. There were (n=5, 11.1%) children who died from drowning, (n=4, 80%) were non-Aboriginal and (n=1, 20%) were Aboriginal. There were (n=15, 33.3%) children who died from motor vehicle-related accidents, (n=8, 53.3%) Aboriginal and (n=7, 46.7%) non-Aboriginal. 28
