Northern Territory Child Deaths Review and Prevention Committee Annual Report 2020-21 Underlying cause of death by ICD-10 chapter and age group, NT, 2016-2020 The largest number of deaths in children aged less than 1 year was from conditions originating in the perinatal period (n=86, 62.8%) followed by congenital malformations, deformations and chromosomal abnormalities (n=24, 17.6%). For all other age groups, the leading cause of death was external causes. As previously stated under Table 15 external causes includes motor vehicle accidents, drownings and intentional self-harm which are potentially preventable causes of death.
