SUNDAY NOVEMBER 21 2021 TV 15 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA TOP DOG RULES When Bluey premiered in 2018, no one could have predicted just how popular the cartoon would become, writes Siobhan Duck THEYRE one of Australias most beloved TV couples and yet theyve never been in the same room. In fact, it wasnt until fairly recently that voice actors Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, aka mum Chilli and dad Bandit on Bluey, even so much as uttered a word to each other. The pair say thats not unusual in the world of animation, where actors record their voices separately and, in the case of Zanetti and McCormack, from opposite sides of the planet. I hadnt even spoken to Melanie until about this time last year when I emailed her and said: Hey Melanie, can I call you up? I feel like we should talk. This is weird, McCormack says with a laugh. So, yeah, weve now had a few phone conversations but Im still yet to meet her. Zanetti reveals that voicing a cartoon is a bit like having a hidden superpower. Ive had a lot of people say, Oh, youre not what I expected [when they discover Im the voice of Chilli], she says. Not just because Im not a cartoon dog, but visually, I guess Im not what they would have put with the voice. It was serendipity that saw Zanetti and McCormack cast in the ABC Kids animation. Both were working on other projects in recording studios separately, of course while the shows creators were adding audio to the then-unknown cartoon. Zanetti, an actor who divides her time between the US and Australia, and award-winning singer-songwriter McCormack, who fronted 90s band Custard, were asked to provide voices as a stopgap until the series was offi cially cast. As McCormack recalls: I was walking out of a lift and a friend said, I know someone whos doing an animated show about a dog family do you want to help out? And I was like, Dude, I dont know how to act. I can barely read, but he convinced me to try it. They gave me a couple of lines on a piece of paper that were highlighted, but we ended up doing the whole episode. They seemed really happy and so we did another 50 episodes and I thought: Hey, Id better get an agent because I guess Im an actor. The actors were both further surprised when Bluey which centres on the eponymous characters imaginative adventures with her younger sister, Bingo became a global hit. So far, the show has won a Logie, an AACTA, an International Emmy and critical acclaim. I dont think anyone could have predicted how much the show has blown up, Zanetti says. But when they showed me the [fi rst] episode, I was like: OK, this is something really special. And I fell in love instantly because it hurt my heart how cute it was, how true to life and special this creation was. I didnt know it would be as big as it is, but I did know it was something unique that I hadnt seen before. McCormack, who grew up watching The Flintstones and The Jetsons, likens the shows appeal to that of The Simpsons thanks to it featuring jokes for all ages. When I fi rst did it, I thought it was going to be like some YouTube short clip thing. I didnt think it was even going to be on the tele, to be honest, he reveals with a laugh. But people love it. Zanetti adds: I have friends who are like, I dont have children, Im in my 30s and I watch Bluey. So, its not just parents and children it can be enjoyed by anyone, because of how beautifully its made.
