Thursday April 7 2022 SPORT 33 V1 - NTNE01Z01MA Myrtle on track for cup heats THE Steele Bolton-trained greyhound Myrtle Monelli has bounced back to her best form just in time for the heats of the Easter Cup. After having her colours lowered at her previous start, Myrtle Monelli was impressive in winning the main distance race over 537m at Winnellie Park on Sunday. Once the daughter of Hecton Bale found the lead heading out of the straight the first time, it was put down the glasses as she careered away to defeat kennelmate Porsche Monelli and the rest of her quality opponents in the good time of 31.52 seconds. With the Easter Cup heats coming up on Sunday, she will be the testing material for all of her opposition. Graeme Ferns and Andrew Lasker were the leading trainers on the night with doubles. Ferns promising youngster Roma Bella made it back-to- back wins while Muskeg used box eight to full advantage to swoop late and defeat a good field of open sprinters in the slick time of 18.02 seconds for the 312m journey. Laskers two winners were Zipping Bambi and Nigels Chance. Greg Aldam Think its OK to run Jockey Nash Rawiller will have the final say on tactics when he rides Think It Over in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Picture: Getty Images TRAINER Kerry Parker will rely on Think It Overs will to win to overcome a dislike for heavy tracks when he contests the race of the century, the $4m Queen Elizabeth Stakes, at Randwick on Saturday. With Sydneys wet weather continuing, the Randwick track surface will be heavy on Saturday. Parker concedes Think It Over is not as effective on heavy tracks but confirmed the outstanding weightfor-age galloper would take his place in the Group 1 race over 2000m. This is his grand final and he has absolutely bounced off his last-start Tancred Stakes run, so he will be there on Saturday, he said. His best asset is when he builds momentum and his stride gets longer but on these heavy tracks he doesnt quite get to that full length of stride. But he still tries hard and gives his best. He deserves to be there for what is an absolutely cracking race. Think It Over has become the forgotten horse in the stellar Queen Elizabeth Stakes line-up, drifting to $31 in latest TAB fixed odds betting behind $3 favourite Verry Elleegant. Parker believes Think It Overs last-start effort when fourth behind Duais in the Tancred Stakes over 2400m stands the gelding in good stead for Saturdays big race. Ive got a very fit horse for Saturday, he said. His run in the Tancred was very good because he lost a bit of momentum on the turn. He was behind Spanish Mission and it never took him into the race. We know he has to build into his races, so that made it a bit hard for him. Parker dismissed suggestions Think It Over might be a surprise leader in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, hoping instead he can settle in the one-one position. I do think hes better when he has something to chase, he said. But we will leave it up to Nash (Rawiller) on the day. Parker also believes his three-yearold filly Hope In Your Heart is a better chance than her $34 odds suggest in the Group 1 $1m ATC Australian Oaks (2400m). We are happy to press on to the Oaks, he said. She has thrived, held her weight, even put on some condition. There is not a lot of her but she is doing really well. From barrier 17 we will ride her quietly and hopefully the track gives the swoopers their chance. She usually does her best work late in her races. Stuart, who left Parramatta to coach the Raiders after the sacking of David Furner, has wasted no time stamping his authority on his new team, training them in 40C heat and sending them to aweek-long elite training camp. The former NSW and Australia coach has seen big potential for McCrone at hooker. Faith inMoses to deliver title MOSESWigness has taken over the reins again at Brothers Rugby League club for the 2014 season. Wigness, who coached the club for three years and won the 2010 and 2011 premierships, replaces Anthoiny Castro who had held the position for the past two seasons. The clubs seniors sign-on day is at Airport Tavern today from 1pm. Brothers spokesman John Adams said the clubwanted to regain the premiership that they lost to Palmerston last year. New rules to endmass debates MANLY coach Geoff Toovey says captain Jamie Lyon wont have to change his on-field approach to referees despite recent NRL rule changes. Lyon and Canterburys Michael Ennis are seen as two of the games leading debaters when it comes to arguing withmatch officials. But they are set to be stymied by a new law that limits where andwhen captains can speak to refs. Under new rules captains will only be able to speak to refs during a stoppage in play. Lachlan schooled by Shark RUGBY LEAGUE ByDOUGBOOTH MacKillop Sharks centre Levi Russell with student Lachlan Miller at the merger announcement yesterday Picture: JUSTIN SANSON LACHLAN Miller wants to play senior rugby league when he grows up. The MacKillop Catholic College student discovered plenty of ways to help him reach that goal from the now MacKillop Sharks hardtackling centre Levi Russell yesterday. Lachlan, 13, and Russell, 22, were integral parts of the launch to merge the Sharks with the Palmerstonbased college. I like rugby league because of the teamwork that is involved in playing, said Lachlan, who has been playing the game for four years. It is not just a one-man game. I like running with the ball and scoring tries. Russell said young players such as Lachlan were the future of the 13-a-side game. We are looking for a premiership this season and building links such as this is vital for the future, he said. College principal Loretta Graham said MacKillop was trying to build a community spirit through sporting organisations and this was another step forward. David Graham is the Year 8 music co-ordinator at MacKillop but his other passion is rugby league. Growing up in Cairns, he played his first rugby league in Queensland and last year he was with the Palmerston Raiders. However, as the brainchild behind the merger of the school and club, he has new allegiances. The Palmerston demographic is much different to Darwin, Graham said. Queensland and NSW influence the culture. Graham said the merger would help provide a grassroots pathway that had not existed before in rugby league in the Northern Territory. It is important that we try and bridge the gap between school and club, he said. The Sharks will hold their senior sign-on at Mary MacKillop School today from 10am.
