Notes

This body of work is a response to artist Donald Friend's depictions of nubile Asian youth as ornamental objects to be analysed with an anthropological gaze. This series is focused on returning the gaze. I don't want to police desire, but in an affectionate and playful way I intend to join the conversation, as a gay Asian artist. It also talks to Rice Queens and racist gay men, white privileged men who can create history and have influence on how Asian gay men can move through public spaces and what currency they may have. I am eroticizing them, referencing native species, and also playing with the notion of gay men's perceived relationship with nature, especially focused on the Christian Idea of homosexuality being unnatural. Statement by the artist Andy Ewing., The Northern Territory Library collects and maintains records of enduring value from LGBTIQ communities, individuals and organisations across the Northern Territory. These records comprise the Queer Archive - a unique collection of material which provides insight to the distinct social, cultural and political history and activities of the LGBTIQ communities in the Northern Territory. The Queer Archive includes original artworks, published material including historic journals and periodicals relating to LBGTIQ studies: organisational records, audio-visual material, play transcripts, photographs, born-digital materials, flyers, posters and other ephemera. The NTL Queer Archive is a living archive and continues to accept donations and deposits., Manuscript reference no.: MS 165., Queer Archive, These paintings were part of the Pride NT: our queer history, an exhibition held at the Northern Territory Library 30 September 2015 - 10 November 2015., The Darwin Pride Festival: PRIDE NT : our queer history, was an exhibition that explored the beginnings of the Pride Festival and celebrating 30 years of Darwin Pride Festivals. It is a time for celebration, reflection and re-evaluation; an opportunity to see how far we have come; think about the challenges of our community today; and to look towards the future., Darwin Pride Festival,
