Picture: Leithal Pictures DARWIN Dragons have rocked the XXXX Darwin AGrade competition after giving undefeated Casuarina an almighty scare in their Round 11 clash on Saturday. The last-placed Dragons came within a try of this seasons biggest upset by playing for territory in torrid conditions but couldnt quite go the distance, falling 20-14 to the Cougars at Rugby Park. Winger Hayden Riggs (one try) and flyhalf Mickael Becat-Narbey (three penalties) filled out the Dragons scoresheet while hooker Hosea Fotukava and fullback David Jacobson crossed the whitewash for Casuarina in a game that highlighted just how small the gap between first and fifth is this season. The boys gave it a really good crack and we stayed within our goal of seven points (and a bonus point), Dragons backrower Hirini Murfitt said. We kicked for corners and pressured Casuarina into mistakes down in their half, I dont think they were expecting us to be able to put that kind of pressure on. But thats down to attitude since Christmas weve been putting our heads down, getting involved more and have been more competitive across the park. And having players back from injury and holidays like Mickael and (centre) Todd McManus just adds a little professionalism and helps lift our backline to a higher standard. With just three games left of their regular season, the Dragons will need to win at least twice to knock Palmerston out of finals contention. But Murfitt believes his club has already proven itself a force. Itd be great if we can make that top four and I think itd really scare those other teams having us in the finals but as a club I think weve already found success this season. Our women have been playing exceptionally well and I know theyve got a bone to pick after losing the last grand final they beat Casuarina on the weekend and theyre improving every week. I just want to see us putting in good performances and growing as a club. In Saturdays other Darwin A-Grade clash, Uni Pirates got the better of Souths in a physical 23-7 affair. It was the first really wet game weve played all year and we were really pleased to keep them to just one try and convert our opportunities into points, Pirates flyhalf Robbie Butcher said. With only four rounds to go, its just about trying to consolidate our top-four spot so we were pleased to get a win on Ladies Day in front of the girls. Theyve been getting good numbers since Christmas so theres a good vibe growing in their team as well. Casuarina & Uni Pirates also bagged wins along with Katherines Rucking Roos in the NT Bitumen & Asphalt BGrade competition while Darwin Dragons rolled the Cougars 29-5 in the womens sevens match of the round. Junior rugby also made its return with 19 games played under Friday night lights at Rugby Park. Some 24 games are expected this coming Friday with U14s and U16s girls sevens scheduled to play. The MacKillop Catholic College student discovered plenty of ways to help him reach that goal from the now MacKillop Sharks hardtackling centre Levi Russell yesterday. Lachlan, 13, and Russell, 22, were integral parts of the launch to merge the Sharks with the Palmerstonbased college. I like rugby league because of the teamwork that is involved in playing, said Lachlan, who has been playing the game for four years. It is not just a one-man game. I like running with the ball and scoring tries. Russell said young players such as Lachlan were the future of the 13-a-side game. We are looking for a premiership this season and building links such as this is vital for the future, he said. College principal Loretta Graham said MacKillop was trying to build a community spirit through sporting organisations and this was another step forward. David Graham is the Year 8 music co-ordinator at MacKillop but his other passion is rugby league. Growing up in Cairns, he played his first rugby league in Queensland and last year he was with the Palmerston Raiders. However, as the brainchild behind the merger of the school and club, he has new allegiances. The Palmerston demographic is much different to Darwin, Graham said. Queensland and NSW influence the culture. Graham said the merger would help provide a grassroots pathway that had not existed before in rugby league in the Northern Territory. It is important that we try and bridge the gap between school and club, he said. The Sharks will hold their senior sign-on at Mary MacKillop School today from 10am.
