Abstract
Over the past four decades the water level of the Alice Springs Town Basin has been gradually declining from a combination of increasing demand and extraction and prolonged dry periods with relatively few significant basin recharge events.
The past four years in particular has brought some of the hottest and driest weather conditions on record in Central Australia. The Town Basin is reaching levels in some parts not seen since it was the town’s primary water supply in the 1960s.
The basin now serves as a non-potable source of irrigation water supply. It plays an important part in maintaining open green spaces for sport and recreation in Alice Springs. The Basin also plays a critical role in maintaining ecological and cultural values of the Todd River. Values that are intrinsic to Alice Springs’ identity and to its sustainable social, cultural and economic future.,
