Abstract
An aerial survey of feral herbivores (camels, horses, cattle and donkeys) was undertaken in the central Australian MacDonnell Ranges region from 9-14 September 2024. The purpose of the survey was to assist in prioritising aerial culling activities, to be undertaken under a Commonwealth project ‘Threat Abatement in the MacDonnell Ranges for Threatened Fauna and Flora’ (Priority Places Project), focussed on improving landscape condition and the recovery of threatened species found within the bioregion.
The survey covered an area of 23,246km2 and was undertaken primarily to the west/north-west of Alice Springs but also included the Santa Teresa Aboriginal Land Trust to the south-east. Most of the survey areas and transects were the same as those used in a previous survey (2016) and used the same methods, to allow a comparison of abundance and distribution of key feral herbivore species over time.,
